Application Instructions for 2020 SDU Master Admissions

Shandong University, founded in 1901 under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, is a key comprehensive university with a long history, a variety of disciplines, strong academic strength, and distinctive characteristics, which has great influence both at home and abroad and has been selected as A-class university in the construction of world class university. There are at present 12 general disciplines for undergraduates and postgraduates, namely philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and fine arts. Currently, 16 disciplines rank top 1% of ESI world rankings for academic influence and contribution. Shandong University has signed cooperation agreements with more than 200 schools in over 30 countries and regions.

In order to recruit outstanding international Master degree students, we hereby formulate this application instruction.

I. Eligibility

1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good physical and mental health, aged between 18 and 35 and possess a valid foreign passport with a validity of at least six months.

2. The eligibility for applicants who hold a foreign passport but used to be a Chinese citizen will be in accordance with Document No.83 (2009) of the PRC Ministry of Education.

3. Academic qualification:

-Applicants who apply for a master’s degree program must hold a bachelor's degree or above.

Note: Applicants who have not graduated yet must submit an expected graduation certificate / document certified by their current institution. It should contain the expected date of graduation. When admitted to SDU, the applicant must provide an original graduation certificate upon registration. Failure to do so will invalidate the admission offer.

II. Application Date

January the 15th to June the 15th, 2020 (Note: the deadline for Chinese Government Scholarship application is March 31st, 2020).

III. Application Procedure

All the international students must apply through the SDU Online Application System for International Students at http://www.apply.sdu.edu.cn.

Chinese Government Scholarship applicants must complete two online applications and one paper-based application by March the 31st. First, they must complete the online applications via the following two systems:

1) The SDU Online Application System for International Students at http://www.apply.sdu.edu.cn;

2) CSC Online Application System at http://www.campuschina.org (institution code: 10422).

Chinese Government Scholarship type B applicants must also send their application materials by post to the Admission Office of SDU International Students Admission Office of Department of International Affairs. The address is: 27 Shanda Nanlu, Shandong University (Central Campus), Mingde Building, C301, Jinan, P. R. China; Postal code: 250100.

IV. Academic Programs

In addition to programs taught in Chinese, international applicants have the option of choosing programs taught in English. You can only apply for one program. In general, after being admitted it is not possible to change your program. Students may choose to complete their degree requirements sooner and graduate early or request to delay graduation due to the lack of academic progress. Language requirements

Chinese-taught

1. New HSK Level 5 (180 points or higher).

2. The only exception of the Chinese proficiency test requirement is for applicants who have obtained their highest degree in an institution where the primary language of instruction was Chinese. Official proof must be submitted in this case.

English-taught

1. All applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit the results of the IELTS (6.0 or above) or TOEFL (iBT) (80 or above/TOEFL Mybest Scores are accepted, DI code: C296) or other equivalent certificates of English proficiency.

2. Applicants will be exempt from providing English proficiency test results if one of the following criteria is met:

a. Native English speakers (U.K., U.S., Canada, New-Zealand, Australia).

b. Applicants who have obtained their highest degree in an institution where the primary language of instruction is English. Then official proof must be submitted.

Required Documents

1. The biographic (information) page of your passport

2. Bachelor's degree or certificate / document of the expected graduation date (must be notarized)

3. Official, up-to-date transcripts for all undergraduate courses the applicant has undertaken

4. Two letters of recommendation by associate professor or above in Chinese or English

5. A Research or study plan in Chinese or English

Note: Applicants for programs taught in English must submit a research or study plan in English, and should at least contain: a self-introduction; why you are applying for SDU? Explain your interest in the chosen program. Anything else the applicant may want to add to the motivation to support his or her application is tolerated.  

6. Abstract(s) of essay(s)/ graduation thesis/ a list of publications (if applicable)

7. Certificate of language proficiency

8. Completed Foreigner Physical Examination Form (valid for 6 months)

9. After obtaining an e-offer, applicants may be required to submit their proof of funding documentation (e.g. a bank statement). Chinese Government Scholarship recipients will be exempt from the funding documentation.

1. Applicants should maintain the highest standards of candor and upload the scanned version of all the complete authentic documentation on time.

2. All documents in languages other than Chinese and English must be officially translated into English/Chinese and certified by your institution.  

3. Incomplete applications will not be processed; the University will ask the applicant to complement needed materials if necessary.

VI. Registration

All international students are required to register at SDU after being accepted. You have to register according to the date stated in the admission letter.

3. Medical Insurance Premiums

According to the regulations of the PRC Ministry of Education, all international students must be covered by the Comprehensive Health Insurance Plan for Foreign Students throughout their entire period of study. SDU international students must purchase the insurance plan upon registration at SDU by submitting copies of their passports. The cost of the insurance plan is 800 RMB/year per person. International students who fail to do so will see their enrollment canceled.

Chinese Government Scholarship students are exempt from the above and automatically covered.

VIII. Visa

 Admitted students must apply for a study visa at the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in their home country with the Admission Notice and JW 201/202 Form. International students who will study in China for less than 6 months should apply for the X2 Visa. Students who will study in China for more than 6 months are required to obtain the X1 Visa. To stay in China legally, it is mandatory for X1 visa holders to apply for the Residence Permit within 30 days after the entry date by submitting their application to SDU International Student Affairs Office in a timely manner.

Chinese University Program is a full scholarship for designated Chinese universities and certain provincial education offices in specific provinces or autonomous regions to recruit outstanding international students to study in China.

Chinese Government Scholarship-Sino-US Cultural Exchange Scholarships (Type B)

The full scholarship provided by the Chinese ministry of education is used for some Chinese universities to directly select and recruit outstanding American students to pursue graduate degrees in China.

Chinese Government Scholarship-China-Russia Exchange Program Scholarships (Type B)

In order to further deepen the china-Russia strategic partnership of coordination, promote educational exchanges and cooperation between the two countries, and enrich the content of china-Russia people-to-people exchange mechanism, the ministry of education has set up a special scholarship for China-Russia people-to-people exchange, with a quota of 10 students per year, for the recruitment of postgraduate students from the People's Friendship University of Russia.

In order to support development of Confucius Institutes, facilitate Chinese language promotion and Chinese cultural transmission in the world, cultivate qualified Chinese language teachers and talented students of Chinese language, Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) launches the “Confucius Institute Scholarships” program for providing sponsorship to students, scholars and Chinese language teachers of other countries for pursuing a study in China

MOFCOM Scholarship (Type A)

MOFCOM Scholarship is set up by Ministry of Commerce of People’s Republic of China to further strengthen the communication and cooperation between China and other countries as well as to develop talents for developing countries. Starting from 2015, MOFCOM Scholarship mainly sponsors the young and the middle-aged talents from recipient countries to pursue their postgraduate degree education in China and entrusts China Scholarship Council to administer the Scholarship.

Bilateral Program includes a full or partial scholarship established by MOE in accordance with educational exchange agreements or consensus between Chinese government and governments of other countries, institutions, universities or international organizations.
